Shakira was born on February 2, 1977 in Barranquilla, Colombia as the only child of Nidya del Carmen Ripoll Torrado and William Mebarak Chadid. Shakira wrote her first poem, "La Rosa De Cristal" ("The Crystal Rose") when she was only four years old. When Shakira was eight years old, she switched her interest from poetry writing to song writing. Her first song was titled "Tus gafas oscuras" ("Your dark glasses") which was inspired by her father, who for years wore dark glasses, to hide his grief for his two year old son's death. All throughout her child Shakira enjoyed singing for her classmates and teachers.
Between the ages of ten and thirteen Shakira was invited to perform at several events in Barranquilla and gained some recognition in the area. She soon became acquainted with a local theater producer Monica Ariza, who was impressed with her talents. Determined to help Shakira with her career, Ariza convinced Sony Colombia executive Ciro Vargas to hold an audition for Shakira. Shakira performed three songs for Sony executives and in return they signed her to the record label to record three albums.
Shakira's debut album, Magia, was recorded with Sony Music and released in 1991 when she was only thirteen years old. The songs on the album were a collaboration of music that Shakira wrote since she was 8 years old. The album's single "Magia" was a hit on Colombian radio and gave Shakira much exposure; however the album generally wasn't a big success. Shakira's second studio album, Peligo, was released in 1993. Shakira was not pleased with the outcome of her work, and therefore refused to advertise the album causing it to be a commercial failure. Shakira decided to take a break from recording in 1994, so she could get her high school diploma.
In 1995, Shakira released her next album, Pies Descalzos (English: Bare Feet). The album brought her great popularity in Latin America, having four hit singles "Estoy Aquí," "Pies Descalzos", "Sueños Blancos," and "Dónde Estás Corazón." The music from Pies Descalzos was unlike typical Latin pop music. Shakira effectively created an authentic sound for her album. It debuted at #1 in eight different countries. However, in the U.S. Billboard 200, Shakira's album only peaked at #180. In August 1996, the RIAA certified the album platinum status. In March 1996, Shakira went on to her first international tour titled "Tour Pies Descalzos". Just one year later, Shakira received three Billboard Latin Music Awards for Album of the Year, Video of the Year, and Best New Artist.
Shakira's fourth album, ¿Dónde Están Los Ladrones? (Where Are The Thieves), was released on September 28, 1998. The album became an ever bigger hit than Pies Descalsos. On the day of its official release in Miami, the album sold to 300,000 copies in one day. It peaked at #131 U.S. Billboard 200 and charting 11 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Top Latin Albums. It sold over 1,500,000 copies in the U.S. alone, making it one of the best selling Spanish albums in the U.S. Worldwide, the album sold over 10million copies. Shakira received her first Grammy Award nomination in 1999 for Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album. In March 2000, Shakira embarked on her Tour Anfibio, a two-month tour of Latin America and the United States. In August 2000, she won the Favorite International Artist for Ojos Asi at the MTV Video Music Awards. On September 9, 2000, Shakira performed Ojos Así at the Latin Grammy Awards, where she was nominated in five categories, and won the award in two of her nominations. Shakira's performance of Ojos Asi was voted as the Greatest Latin Grammy performance of all time.
Due to the success of ¿Dónde Están Los Ladrones?, Shakira began working on a crossover album to English. "Whenever, Wherever" ("Suerte" in Spanish countries) was released as the first lead single from Shakira's first English album in October 2001. The track was produced by Shakira, and it was an international success. Her album, Laundry Service, was released on November 13, 2001. The album debuted at number three on the U.S. Billboard 200 Albums chart. Seven tracks became successful international singles. The album became the best selling album of 2002, selling more than 13 million copies worldwide and was the most successful album in Shakira's career.
Shakira stayed out of the spotlight for over two years. Oral Fixation Vol. 1, the first album of Shakira's Oral Fixation project, was released on June 7, 2005 in North America, Latin America and Australia. The lead single from the album, "La Tortura", was released in April and achieved large-scale success, reaching #23 in the United States. It spent a record of twenty-five weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks chart. On February 8, 2006, Shakira won her second Grammy Award for Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album. Shakira received four Latin Grammy Awards on November 2, 2006 including Record of the Year and Song of the Year for ''La Tortura'', and Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album for Fijación Oral Vol. 1.
Oral Fixation Vol. 2 was released on November 29, 2005 in North America, Australia, and continental Europe. The album debuted at number five on the U.S. ''Billboard 200'' Albums chart. Her single, "Don't Bother", failed to peak within the top 40 in the United States, only reaching #42. Shakira paired with Haitian rapper Wycle Jean to record the second single for the album, "Hips Don't Lie". The song became biggest hit of the 21st century and Shakira's first number one single on the U.S. ''Billboard Hot 100''. It also hit number one in at least 55 other countries. Shakira performed at the U.S. Grammy Awards for the first time and earned the nomination Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals for "Hips Don't Lie" with Wyclef Jean. Shakira embarked on her fourth tour, the Oral Fixation Tour, in June, 2006 with 125 shows on 5 different continents. Shakira also performed on July 9, 2006 at the FIFA World Cup final in Germany.
On July 2, 2008, Shakira signed a 10-year deal with Live Nation worth between $70 million and $100 million. The contract with Epic Records calls for three more albums-one in English, one in Spanish, with touring from the Live Nation deal to begin immediately. The first single from Shakira's third English album is titled "She Wolf" received positive reviews. The single was successful worldwide, reaching number one in Latin America, number two in five countries, and within the top 10 of ten other countries. Her full album, She Wolf, was released in October 2009.
