Maxwell was born on May 23, 1973 in Brooklyn, NY as Gerald Maxwell Rivera. He was born into the home of Puerto Rican mother who was born and raised in Vieques, Puerto Rico and black Caribbean father. As a three year old boy, Maxwell suffered the loss of his father in a tragic plane crash accident. As a result of the experience, Maxwell grew into an extremely shy child who was very into his Baptist religion. Maxwell began his singing career as a choir member in his Baptist church. However, it wasn't until the early 90's, when Maxwell was 17 years old, that he began to take his musical career seriously.

At this time Maxwell began to write his own music, using a cheap Casio keyboard given to him by a friend. His song writing career progressed rapidly, and by late-1991 he was performing on the New York City club scene. As he began to perform more frequently, he began to use the name "Maxwell" as a stage name, which he developed from his middle name.

As Maxwell became more known around the New York City Area, he was discovered by Columbia Records, and signed a recording contract with them in 1994. Shortly after, he began to work with songwriter Leon Ware and noted guitarist Wah Wah Watson, and together they worked on his debut album Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite. When the album was finished, Columbia had doubts about its success and decided not to release it until two years after its completion. When Maxwell's album was finally released in 1996, it at first did not attract many audiences because of its heavy classical soul sound. It wasn't until the release of its second single, "Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder)" that Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite became a success. It sold over 2,000,000 copies, earned a 2X platinum status, and was nominated for a Grammy Award.

Maxwell's second studio album titled, Embrya, was released in 1998. The following year, Maxwell released "Fortunate", a single written by R. Kelly. The single peaked at number one on Billboard Throughout all of Maxwell's career, "Fortunate" stands as his most successful single becoming Billboard's number one R&B single of 1999. Now, Maxwell's third album was released in 2001 and became his most successful album. It was his first Number One on both the Billboard 200 album chart and Billboard's R&B album chart. It featured the hit single "Lifetime" and a studio version of "This Woman's Work" which was a cover of an original Kate Bush song. magazine's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles and Tracks chart.

After taking several years off from his success, Maxwell released his latest album in July of 2009 titled, BLACKsummers'night. The album became his second album to debut at #1 on the Billboard Albums Top 200 chart. He performed his hit single "Pretty Wings" at the 2009 BET Awards. Maxwell received 6 nominations for the 2010 Grammy Awards, including "Best R&B Album" for BLACKsummers'night and "Best Male R&B Vocal Performance" for "Pretty Wings. "Pretty Wings" which was written by Maxwell himself, was also nominated for the "Song of the Year". In honor of his newest album success Maxwell has combined with Jill Scott on a 20-city tour across the United States.
