Dave Matthews Band
Dave Matthews Band, sometimes shortened to DMB, is an American jam band formed in Charlottesville, Virginia in 1991. The founding members were singer-songwriter and guitarist Dave Matthews, violinist Boyd Tinsley, bassist Stefan Lessard, drummer Carter Beauford, and saxophonist LeRoi Moore.
The band's first in-studio demo was recorded in February of 1991. That same year, the band made their first public showing at Charlottesville's Earth Day Festival. After their hit performance, word of the band's sound spread and they were given weekly gigs at local venues. The band was originally called Dumela. However when the band booked shows at local venues Dave would book under his name. At one particular performance they were announced as "Dave Matthews Band" and that was when they acquired their current name.
On November 9, 1993, DMB released its first album, Remember Two Things. The album debuted on college charts as the highest independent entry, and went on to be certified platinum by the RIAA in 2002 which is noted as a significant accomplishment for an independent album. Dave Matthew Band allowed fans to tape their live shows for their personal use, which created a large community of DMB fans and allowed them to become well known.
The band released their first live EP, Recently, in 1994 containing five tracks that were taken from their performed shows. On September 20 of that same year, DMB released their second album, Under the Table and Dreaming, featuring hits "What Would You Say", "Satellite", and "Ants Marching". That album, along with follow-up album, Crash, brought the band a lot of national attention. Between the years of 1996 and 1997 the band won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for the song "So Much to Say" and was nominated for four other Grammy Awards.
On April 28, 1998, Dave Matthew's Band released their third album with RCA, titled Before These Crowded Streets. Their lead single off the album was "Don't Drink the Water" which was inspired by the treatment of Native Americans by the United States government. During the summer of 1999, the band took part in the Woodstock '99 concert and then shortly after released their third live album, Listener Supported. The album was also released as the band's first DVD. That same year Dave Matthew's Band was also nominated for two more Grammy Awards.
During 2000, DMB set up a recording studio of their own, in a countryside home outside Charlottesville. That year they ended their 7 year relationship with producer, Lillywhite and began writing with Glen Ballard who is most famous for his work with Alanis Morissette. Shortly after, they recorded their next album Everyday. The February 27, 2001, release of Everyday was proved to be a huge commercial success. However, several long-time fans were disappointed with the albums new pop sound because it was much different from the bands pervious work. During the next two years the band release three more live albums, The Lillywhite Sessions, Live in Chicago 12.19.98, and Live at Folsom Field, Boulder, Colorado which highlighted songs from their live performances.
During early 2003, the band's career was put on hold as several band members embarked on solo careers. However in late 2003, the DMB got together and played a free benefit concert on the Great Lawn in New York City's Central Park. Then in September of 2004 they played a second benefit free show Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. After seeing the immense crowd that came to their shows, the band decided to return to their recording studio in late 2004 to begin a new album with "a funkier sound". The resulting album, Stand Up, was released on May 10, 2005, debuting at #1 on the Billboard charts with sales of 465,000 copies. That summer Dave Matthews Band played a world tour, playing in Australia for the first time.
In 2006, Dave Matthews Band released a two disk greatest hits album titled, The Best of What's Around Vol. 1. The following year, the band returned to their recording studio to record their seventh studio album. However, during the recording attempt, the band's relationship with their producer was severed and the album was never officially finished.
On August 19, 2008 tragedy hit DMB when it was announced that saxophonist and founding member of Dave Matthews Band, LeRoi Moore, had died unexpectedly from sudden complications stemming from his June ATV accident on his farm. The band still performed their scheduled show at the Staples Center in Los Angeles just a few days later, where Matthews announced the death of the band's "dear friend" to the crowd.
In 2009, LeRoi Moore's was replaced by saxophonist Jeff Coffin, and the band created their newest album, titled Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King and played a supporting summer tour. The band named their most recent album in honor of Moore. The album peaked at number one on the Billboard 200, achieving platinum status. It was nominated for two 2010 Grammy Awards: Best Rock Album and Album of the Year. The band is current on their 2010 tour showcasing their award winning album.
